Our view

In arcadian rural Bucks, Chesham Prep was founded in 1938 by teacher Christina Adlington. Intended as an independent school for boys and girls of ordinary, diligent families, something apart from preps for the very wealthy. These ‘tier two’ families

What the school says

Chesham Prep is a dedicated, nurturing, sporty, creative, inspiring and adventurous family, where children can blossom. Our head is energetic and forward-thinking and renowned for his approachability: four mornings a week he is at the school gates, greeting pupils and chatting to parents, and he regularly spends time reading to the younger years. Our five-year plan is ambitious, we want Chesham to be the first-choice prep in the area. As children progress through the school we continuously track their progress so that we can help advise on the best future school for each child.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

At Chesham Prep, we ensure that the broad curriculum offered is fully accessible to all children and we endeavour to make appropriate reasonable adjustments for this to include pupils with special educational needs or disabilities. We work together with parents, carers, teachers, the SENDCo and pupils to identify any barriers to learning and put the appropriate support in place to reduce or remove these. Our aim is that, once a child has strategies to remove any barriers to learning, they will be able to flourish and learn to the best of their abilities. We have an open-door policy for parents and pupils, and we welcome honest discussions about the support that your child may require. We adapt our provision to the needs of the individual child, in collaboration with teachers, parents and the SENDCo. Some pupils have in-class support, some have small group interventions and some have one-to-one interventions. All pupils who are on our inclusion list have an individual learning plan, which highlights their strengths, interests, needs and sets targets, which are closely monitored and then reviewed termly. We have a well-resourced learning support department, with three small rooms for individual and small group lessons. We provide interventions to develop fine and gross motor skills, confidence, social skills, handwriting, spelling, maths, English and we have weekly visits from a speech and language therapist. We value the importance of developing and maintaining positive relationships with parents, carers and external professionals.
