Frensham Heights is a fiercely creative and forward-thinking school, but it’s the teacher-pupil relationships that have the power to add value. It’s not going to be right for everyone, but parents who put their faith in the slower-burn, progressive approach say there’s a magic that happens here, and they can’t recommend it enough.

Why read our school review?

Unlike other websites, schools can't pay to be included in The Good Schools Guide. This means our review of this school is independent, critical and fair, and written with parents' best interests at heart.

Ben McCarey

Since 2024, Ben McCarey. New to this headship, he already looks at home. Maybe it’s the laid-back vibe of his yellow trousers, blue shirt and trainers that gives us that impression, or the springer spaniel curled up in his office. To work here, ‘you

There’s a rumour that sport’s not great, but ‘We do do sport and we're competitive on the circuit,’ counters their director of sports. Girls’ football made the semi-finals of the ISFA under 15s trophy.

Ethos & heritage

A progressive school since its founding in 1925, pupils wear their own clothes and are on first name terms with teachers. It feels like a small university campus; a maturity that fits neatly with founding principles of giving young people agency.

Pastoral care, inclusivity & discipline

Tolerance and individuality reign here, so it’s hard to see how anyone wouldn’t fit in. ‘You can be whatever you want,’ said one student. ‘Everyone's important.’ But there’s a degree of independence expected of students. It might not work for those

Mobile phone policy

A clear mobile phone policy is a really important part of modern schooling. This school has provided us with their policy.

Mobile phone policy

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Students up to, and including, year 11 are not allowed access to their phones during the school day. Sixth form students can access their phones while in school and are encouraged to model good behaviour and limit this to use in and around the sixth form centre. Up to year 11, boarders have access for a limited time to their phones in the evening before they are handed in for the night. All students should bring a laptop to school every day to access lessons where technology is required.

Frensham Heights school badge

What the school says

Frensham Heights is a progressive co-educational day and boarding school - refreshingly different since 1925 - founded by three women passionate about offering an alternative style of education with the child at its heart. It is a school community based on mutual respect, tolerance and generosity of spirit which strives to educate the whole child – mind, body and spirit. At Frensham we offer a very real and relevant educational alternative to the more formal approach found in traditional state and private schools. Students and staff recognise the strength of relationships and embrace the culture and environment which allows them to just be who they are.

Championing independent thought and curiosity

No speech days, award ceremonies or status here. Instead, honest exploration of real world topics through the junior school years, inspirational weekly morning talks for the senior school by external speakers tackling brave and wide-ranging topics – all important in understanding the community we live in.

Within the curriculum, year 7 and 8 learn about food production, sustainability and biodiversity in the agro-ecological garden, and year 8 students build, run and live in a self-sustaining village in the woods - jumping far out of their modern comfort zones.

Getting active and outdoors

From forest school in the early years through to challenging high-altitude expeditions for older students, getting outdoors is an intrinsic part of the Frensham curriculum. On-site facilities are impressive – extensive playing field on our 120-acre site and all the sports facilities you'd expect from an independent school plus weights and cardio studios, high-ropes, zip wire, climbing wall, bike trails and an outdoor education treehouse. It’s a real passion for students and staff alike, with Frensham being the only school in the UK to hold the gold standard accreditation from the AHOEC - and DofE expeditions are internally run up through gold award.

The extensive extracurricular programme offers archery, forest bathing, foraging, climbing, scuba, ultimate frisbee, high ropes and gardening. Climbing, wakeboarding, dry slope skiing and high ropes are offered as games afternoon options for the senior school and skiing and surfing trips run twice a year.

A creative mindset

Every child experiences dance, music, drama, art, ceramics and design technology from the earliest years through to the end of year 9. Students can then choose to follow their passions alongside their academic subjects, resulting in mathematicians who paint masterpieces and actors who are fabulous historians.

Our sixth form arts awards attract students who excel in their discipline in either the creative or performing arts and want to pursue their passion alongside their chosen A level subjects.

Preparation for life beyond school

We genuinely find that when students leave Frensham they are equipped with self-belief, empathy and the flexibility to adapt. There seems to be an inner confidence and drive that comes from the experience of their time at Frensham. It’s hard to pin down, but it seems our no-uniform, first-name approach really does allow students to work alongside adults and gain mutual respect along the way.

Facilitating A levels are ones that are commonly needed for entry to leading universities. They are: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, further mathematics, geography, history, English literature and classical or modern languages. The % of pupils achieving AAB or higher may therefore decrease if many pupils have opted not to take two or more of the facilitating subjects mentioned.

SEN overview

Frensham Heights is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Frensham Heights provides group lessons from Year 1 for those considered to have mild learning difficulties. These lessons not only offer support, but enable the teacher to monitor individual progress. From Year 7, the school uses diagnostic tests to assess the learning needs of all students. This then influences how lessons are planned and how those with learning needs are managed. Frensham Heights does not have a Special Needs Unit. Our provision is managed by a Director of Support for Learning and a Head of Support for Learning (Junior School). They work with a team of peripatetic specialist teachers who also provide support on a one-to-one basis. Where this is required, it is charged separately. Support teachers and tutors attend a number of continuing professional development courses annually to ensure that they are fully conversant with current theories and strategies in order to support students.
