Hanford either thrills or bemuses. It offers a beguiling way of prolonging childhood, while instilling solid academic and artistic foundations and a likely lifelong horse addiction to any small girl. ‘You just have to worry that nothing will match up afterwards,’ in one mother’s wistful words.

Boarding is, according to the girls and their parents, one of the best things about Hanford. The majority will board during their time and any given week will see 50-60 sleep in. This means that junior dorms on the upper floors of the old house ar

Our view

It would be tempting to think Hanford is all about ponies, particularly as we did not bother changing out of our jodhpurs on Mrs Phillips’s advice after a quick tour of the grounds on horseback: ‘No-one will look twice at you.’ Tempting but wrong:

What the school says

At Hanford Prep, a day and boarding prep school for girls aged between 7-13 years, our pupils learn to work hard and pursue their passions whilst also enjoying a wonderful, carefree childhood. Hanford girls climb trees, ride ponies, make dens and are given time and freedom to develop at their own pace. This combination of fun, hard work and excellent teaching pays dividends when it comes to Common Entrance and scholarships.

We are a small school where everyone knows each other, as a result we can build a curriculum around the needs of each child, valuing their individuality and nurturing their unique blend of talents and interests. Creativity runs throughout Hanford across all the academic subjects – in drama, music, dance – and culminates in the wonderful new Art Barn which houses our art room, handwork (textiles) workshop and exhibition space. The results are impressive, with many girls taking art scholarships or awards to the senior schools of their choice. The girls take their creative talents outside as well; in the kitchen gardens they each have their own space to cultivate, growing vegetables and flowers.

Boarding is a large part of life at Hanford Prep and we have a very modern boarding offer to suit every family, from full boarding to flexi boarding. Weekends are busy with many choosing to stay with their friends to make the most of the activities on offer. Day girls regularly stayover and the majority of pupils will board at some point during their time at Hanford. Dormitories are homely and cosy. Parents find that their daughters quickly settle into school life with the help of their buddy (a current pupil chosen to help look after them in their first days and weeks), our caring boarding team, the girl's tutor, their peer group and the older girls.

Hanford is well known for our riding and ponies. The stables are in the centre of the school and, in their free time, girls often choose to head over to the stables to chat to the ponies and help the Stables Team. Sport is incredibly strong at Hanford and as well as the usual sports of netball, hockey, athletics and tennis the girls take part in cross country, pistol shooting, swimming, gymnastics, lacrosse with our most able athletes and indeed riders, competing at county and national level.

In many ways Hanford Prep needs to be seen to be believed; do contact us to set up a visit. Your daughter will certainly thank you for it!

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

At Hanford, having a specific learning difference is never considered a barrier to learning. We prioritise self-esteem and celebrate girls’ strengths in all areas of school life. As such, all staff are keenly aware of the challenges and possibilities that their subject area may offer and work in close communication with the Head of Learning Support to accommodate girls’ specific needs. Run by a full-time member of staff, the Learning Support department is high-profile and very much part of the mainstream curriculum. Both individual and small-group lessons are offered by a Level 7 qualified teacher, specialising in both literacy and mathematics. The girls receive at least two sessions a week, and we ensure that these lessons develop specific areas of need, but also align closely with the requirements of mainstream lessons. Girls with English as an Additional Language follow the Cambridge English curriculum and receive two lessons each week from a TEFL-qualified member of the English department. Our experience teaching girls with neuro-diversities allows us to cater for each girl on an individual basis. We call upon our wealth of knowledge but also seek advice from professionals and parents to create a secure and happy environment for each girl.
