Welcoming, thoroughly grounded local school delivering a broad and well-rounded curriculum that allows pupils to explore their own interests, providing an excellent foundation for later study and life as well as preparing them thoroughly but unobtrusively for competitive entry to secondary schools. Parents describe the school as ‘a happy place with happy children’. We would certainly concur.

What the school says

An independent school and nursery for children aged 6 months to 11 years.

Entry to the nursery is in order of registration and subject to availability. All children at the nursery are automatically offered a place in the school's reception class. Admission at 4+ is non-selective. Entry into all other year groups follows a successful taster day (‘discovery day’) including informal assessments in English and mathematics; bursarial assistance available.

The school has moved to a fully co-educational model. Our first intake of girls joined reception in September 2023 and in 2024 we accepted girls in other years throughout the school too. The move to co-education will be complete in 2028.

We have outstanding facilities including:

  • Heated 20-metre indoor swimming pool on site, with weekly swimming lessons for all children from nursery upwards. Development swimming squads for pupils in year 4 and after school swimming club available every week. The Mall School is a Richmond Borough swimming champion!

  • Wide choice of sports to play, with specialist sports staff focussing on pupils’ performance, style of play and teamwork. From year 3, pupils spend two afternoons at Sunbury Cricket Club sports facilities (for which we have exclusive access), where they enjoy termly sports including cricket, football and rugby.

  • Drama and performing arts: Alongside drama workshops for our reception to year 2 younger pupils, the school hosts an annual musicals at the Mall show for pupils in years 3 to 5. These performances help to develop their confidence and collaborative working relationships. Year 6 pupils perform an end of year show in our state-of-the-art theatre, which both parents and classmates are invited to attend.

  • Weekly music lessons for all pupils, with opportunities for children to play an instrument from year 2. Regular concerts by our recorder groups, rock band and string orchestra, weekly ensembles and a summer prom.

  • Co-curricular after school clubs offer an exciting variety for pupils of all ages, which develop their cultural, moral, spiritual and emotional experiences. Many clubs are free and run every week during term-time, ranging from 3D printing and Lego to dancing and karate.

Popular 11+ leavers' destinations include: Hampton, KCS Wimbledon, Tiffin, Kingston Grammar, Latymer Upper, Reed's, Halliford, St George's and St James. The curriculum puts great emphasis on sport, music and drama and parents praise the way the school advises on senior school choice and preparation for exams.

SEN overview

The Mall School is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

From reception to year 3, children receive additional help, if required, from our learning support assistant or by the school's SENCo, who also works with children either individually or in a small group. This is in addition to the support that pupils receive from their class teacher. Additionally, in reception and year 1, teaching assistants work with children on programmes of support which are developed and monitored by the class teacher and SENCo. There are two full-time teaching assistants in years 2 and 3 who share their time between the four classes and work in a similar way. Parents of children who are receiving this support are kept informed through a series of termly meetings, parents' evenings and the twice yearly school report. Children in years 4 to 6 who have a diagnosed special educational need, for example dyslexia, are supported through the provision of individual education plans (IEPs). The SENCo, with input from parents and teachers, writes IEPs which highlight an individual's strengths and offers strategies for teachers to use in the classroom to support them. In addition, we have differentiated groups in maths from year 4, small group support teaching in English from year 5 and academic tutors for children who need some extra support or guidance.
