HKUST is secreted away in the rural (as far as anything can be rural in Hong Kong) village of Po Lam, so don't expect quite the ultra-urban skyscraper image you may have of other HK unis. Walking around the campus, the dominant impression is one of hard work. Students can be seen quietly reading a book in the McCafe, or jotting down some presumably brilliant scientific insight in the university canteen (often so studious that it resembles a library with food outlets).
