Who Are They?

Anthony Nemecek

Professional college and university consultant for a number of years and former head of the US-UK Fulbright Commission Educational Advisory Service, Anthony co-authored the original Uni in the USA  (2004), and has contributed to updating every edition since. Now in private practice, he works with individual families in the UK and with and schools and families in Moscow. He is based in the UK.             

Eileen Penman

For 16 years, Eileen was Senior Dean in the College and Careers Counseling office at the American School in London, working with students applying to universities in the US and the UK. She served as chair of the Guidance Committee of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) for 10 years, served on the TOEFL Board, and as a member of the College Board (SAT) and AP advisory boards.  Now in private practice, she is a member of Overseas Association of College Admission Counselling (OACAC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS), at whose conferences she is a regular speaker. She is based in the UK.

  • Recommendations (references)

    Most universities will ask you for at least one reference, written by a careers advisor, headteacher, housemaster, etc. This reference is similar to UCAS, although it should not focus on a particular course, but rather suitability in general for higher education. It is ‘all about’ you and should address academic performance, extra-curricular activities and personal qualities.

  • Deadlines & early decision

    You must meet your deadlines! US universities will not accept late applications unless they have ‘rolling admissions’, meaning they accept students on a first-come, first-served basis.
