Education in Chiswick

Chiswick lies at the eastern tip of the London Borough of Hounslow. Schools-wise, be aware of options in Ealing and Hammersmith & Fulham too, depending on whereabouts in Chiswick you live. There are excellent state primaries in Chiswick with plenty of good school places to go around. When it comes to secondary, many consider options in Acton, Ealing, Hammersmith or Holland Park. Many of the most popular schools are affiliated to one form of Christianity or another, so look out for church attendance requirements at some of the primaries and secondaries. There are comparatively few prep schools in Chiswick, so we’ve highlighted some in the surrounding areas. The independent senior school offering is also limited, but Chiswick tweens and teens happily hop on the tube or one of the myriad school buses which serve the area.

Living in Chiswick

From the handsome Victorian villas of Bedford Park, London’s first garden suburb, to the Georgian river frontage and higgledy-piggledy cottages of Strand-on-the-Green, there’s something for everyone in smart, leafy Chiswick. Chiswick House makes for a delightful walk, as does the River Thames, whose path and pubs are particularly lovely on this stretch. Grab a spot on a sunny terrace to enjoy the river at its best (fans of ‘Sliding Doors’ will recognise the Blue Anchor, but our favourite is the Dove); easier said than done on boat race day, when Chiswick is awash with revellers soaking up atmosphere and ale.

Chiswick High Road snakes its way from Gunnersbury to Hammersmith, offering chi-chi boutiques and restaurants, particularly along the Turnham Green stretch. The people of W4 are commuters, and locals define themselves by their stations: are you Chiswick Park, Gunnersbury, Turnham Green or Stamford Brook? District Line grumbles are de rigueur. South of the A4, within the river’s wide meander, you’ll be closer to Chiswick Station with its trains to Waterloo. Residential but not suburban, quiet yet well connected, a chic and cosmopolitan area where you’re never more than a short scooter ride from a playground; Chiswick offers the best of all worlds.
