Education scene in Wimbledon

Wimbledon falls within the Greater London area and is, together with Wimbledon Park, at the northern tip of the borough of Merton. In terms of education, Wimbledon has no shortage of excellent schools in the immediate surrounds and slightly further afield. Good variety too, with schools that cater for all needs, preferences, interests and budgets. At primary level, there are successful state options and a whole raft of pre-prep and prep schools taking children through to the age of 11 or 13. For older children, although Merton abandoned selective grammar schools decades ago, some neighbouring boroughs have kept theirs and they continue to attract large numbers of applications from the Wimbledon area. Meanwhile, the local state secondaries, slated in years past, are now performing more positively and growing in popularity. The private school options include two academic powerhouses; selective single sex schools right in the heart of Wimbledon itself: one in the village and one just down the hill in the town.

Living in Wimbledon

When people say ‘Wimbledon’, thoughts immediately turn to the annual tennis championships. The name conjures up images of strawberries and cream, manicured lawns and the iconic purple and green regalia. But Wimbledon is so much more than a fortnight of sport each summer. First settled in the Iron Age, possibly stormed by the Romans during the invasion of Britain by Claudius, mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 and regularly visited by Tudor monarchs, Wimbledon is steeped in history and offers today’s residents a satisfying balance of urban and rural. Wimbledon Common, saved in the 19th century from the clutches of the rapacious Earl Spencer, offers over 1000 acres of beautiful open space, while top-notch transport links (rail, tube, and tram) mean that travelling into, or further out of, London is a doddle. Wimbledon draws in families who are looking for space, for a safe and pleasant environment, for restaurants and entertainment, and for the experiences they can secure for their children. Wimbledon has it all.
