What the parents say...

Some children thrive here but they need to be academically able and sporty. Atmosphere leans towards the macho and is boy dominated in any event, particularly in Years 7 & 8.

Our children have been lucky enough to attend GW from 2 1/2 to 13. We couldn't have been more pleased with their schooling and the children it has helped them become. Both left achieving scholarships in their Common Entrance Exams in different fields. The school is an exceptionally happy place to be - whilst all the children are encouraged to excel in what they were good at - to be the best version of themselves that they can be, their motivation comes from within, rather than feeling obliged to succeed. We had no idea how exceptional GW was until we moved (briefly) back to London when the children were 8 and 9. Both were offered places at a top highly selective London day school, (a testament to how well they had been taught at GW) but we lasted half a term before we moved back to Sussex as we realised the incomparable difference between a pressurised London education and one built on a basis of 'mud and love'. The academic achievements were the same, but the grounding for life offered at Great Walstead, along with the amazing countryside and the chance to really be a child, build camps and play sport outside everyday, we felt, was the very best start for our children. If you are seeking a school that produces emotionally intelligent, socially confident children that are both interested and interesting, then this is the school for you. Academically strong, (every child sitting an academic scholarship in 2015 CE was successful), perhaps it's only weakness is it does not shout its achievements loudly enough from the roof tops, but the parents certainly sing its praises.

In this modern age it hard for a prep school to strike a balance. To maintain an open, attentive relationship with the parents of their children rather than developing a growing client base, all the while upholding a genuinely loving atmosphere in which each child can be educated to an extremely high standard, competing for sought after places at secondary level, yet thriving, unhurried through their precious childhood in acres of woodland. We have been lucky enough to find a school that meets all of this criteria: Great Walstead School in Lindfield is set in over 265 acres of greenery and woodland within mid Sussex, midway between the accessibility of Gatwick and the historic hills of the South Downs and the diversity of Brighton. This long standing school provides not only an excellent academic education but teaches children the values of being kind and thoughtful, developing in each child a true belief in themselves and a respect for those around them. In the past ten years we have seen the school go from strength to strength under the remarkably innovative, totally dedicated and professional guidance of Headmaster Colin Baty, who is calmly ever present, completely involved and knows every child by name, character, interests and ability. We are blessed to have this irreplaceable, forward thinking guidance twofold with the addition of Mrs Baty, who echoes her husband’s genuinely proactive love of the school and the children. One sports day she was rushing to watch a race, I asked if any of her children were running and she replied “Yes, they are all mine”. Mr and Mrs Baty work as a team with carefully appointed, equally dedicate “family” of enthusiastic teachers who we daily trust wholeheartedly to educate and care for our children. “Great” Walstead is aptly named. Our only regret is that this incredible prep-school does not offer secondary education.

Thank the school

Parents and pupils often have cause to acknowledge the help and support they have received from their schools, for example in helping in the choice of further education or careers. "Say thank you" allows you to send a quick note of appreciation to the school in general or to an individual teacher.

This is a thank you to your school, teacher or careers adviser who helped you to get where you are now.

Please fill in the fields below, which we will transform into a letter of thanks from you to them.

Leave blank if you want to thank the school as a whole

Can be left blank but, if you can, think of a few words that will bring a smile.
