What the school says...
‘How are you feeling?’ A four-word question, yet perhaps one of the hardest to answer. If you were asked this question today, what would your answer be? At Avon House, this is a question that our pupils are asked on a daily basis and one that we are committed to helping our children have the emotional literacy and confidence to answer. For once we know how our pupils are feeling, we can tailor our teaching approach to create an environment that encourages working and learning for all.
We believe that a child’s character is a combination of all the values and qualities that they possess and that by providing pupils with a range of opportunities and experiences, both within and outside of the classroom, we will then provide a platform for all of our pupils to flourish.
Whilst we are a small school, our grounds have been cleverly developed to make the most of the space with our buildings, both old and new, telling a story of over a 100 years’ of education.
Conveniently located on Woodford High Road, Essex, we have recently partnered with The Woodford Wells Sports Club, a partnership that provides us with unique access via the school’s playground to extensive sporting facilities.
At Avon House we are a family, we know our children and our parents well. At grassroots in the classrooms, our children explore, create and develop into well-rounded individuals. We give our children the tools they need to develop from their first entry point whether that is in our nursery class (3 years+ entry), reception class (4 years+ entry) or later on in our pep department (7 years+ entry) and ensure that each and every child is prepared for senior school.
Our staff possess a wealth of educational experience which blends well together in class teaching, as well as allowing for specialisms to be used across the whole age range for all pupils to benefit. Spanish is taught from age 3, with Spanish and French taught in our prep department. Art and Music are also key elements for us and we have eight visiting music teachers each week who offer private lessons, a number of school choirs, LAMDA public speaking, dance and drama opportunities.
We were the second independent school in the country to receive gold status as a UNICEF Rights Respecting School. Mirroring our school ethos, our pupils are encouraged to use the ‘Rights of the Child’ to express not only how we should all act around others but also how we can support children in the broader community.
We appreciate that choosing a school is a hard decision, with a range of mixed emotions. We think there are similarities between buying a house and choosing a school. When you buy a house, you know from the moment you walk in that feeling of home and we think the same is true when selecting a school setting for your child. It has to feel like home. ...Read more

Special Education Needs
At Avon House Preparatory School, we believe that each pupil is an individual who needs to have opportunities to fulfil his or her potential. We aim to make the school a happy place for all pupils to learn and grow spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (in line with our SMSC Policy) as well as academically. We aim to create a culture which celebrates diversity and builds on the strengths of each pupil. We recognise that all SEND pupils have a right to receive a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum; a curriculum that sometimes needs to be adapted according to the diverse needs, interests and talents of the pupils. In order to achieve this, we believe that early identification of need is important so provision can be implemented to address it. The inclusion lead takes an active role in supporting interventions for pupils across the school and additional support of teaching assistants are available in each classroom. Pupils of Avon House also have access to supplementary support including a school counsellor and a speech and language therapist. Avon House also has close links with the neighbouring Sheila Ferrari Dyslexic Centre, where the school can access advice and children can access additional support. We strive to be a fully inclusive school where all pupils are welcome including those with SEND. We are happy to consider admitting children with EHCPs, if we feel we are able to meet the needs of the child.
