Special Education Needs
We have, in the recent past, had pupils with disabilities requiring the use of wheelchairs in Kilwinning Academy. The building has been modified for wheelchair use eg lift to upper floors, evac chairs, special equipment and modifications in Technical, Home Economics and Music. More importantly we have staff who are experienced and comfortable in working with pupils with physical disabilities. We have a good working relationship with the outside agencies who also work with these pupils. In addition over the years we have learned a great deal about the social and emotional needs of these pupils and so we are confident that systems could be put in place early in order to support pupils. We believe that we have a caring and supportive staff who will do everything they can to meet the needs, academically and socially, of individual pupils whatever their Special Need. There is a college of Further Education near to the school and Kilwinning Academy has developed very good links especially with the department dealing with Inclusive Education. Kilwinning Academy has one pupil on the autistic spectrum in first year with two more pupils planning to join us next session. The staff (teaching and non teaching) have been very supportive of the one pupil and have taken on board any suggestions given by the Support Department. The transition for this pupil has proved to be successful so far.
