Spectacular growth of nursery education (now provided on three sites, including one in Newport) - 70 per cent of pre-prep intake comes from the school’s own nurseries. Our visit on a ‘Foodie Friday’ coincided with ‘wormy pasta salad’ on classroom menus. Prep is awash with subject specialists (some escapees from state sector, others ex-other independents) who can take pupils as far as they want to go. Art teachers (ex-Monmouth senior) explained how they are adapting OCR syllabus for St John’s and thereby widening pupils’ artistic horizons. We appreciated the ongoing Picasso exhibition...

Head

Since September 2016, Ruth Frett, previously housemistress at Cranleigh School. She has an English degree from St Andrews and moved on to Trinity College of Music, performing all over Europe as professional singer for 10 years. Four children later, she moved into teaching, via London primary and prep schools, becoming head of middle school, head of RS and chaplain at Cranleigh Prep. She currently teaches RS, classical civilisation and drama, and coaches netball and rounders.

Ruth is married to Dan, an American who works for a software company in the City as well as serving as a priest at their local parish church. Their four children range from late teens to mid 20s.
