Special Education Needs
At The Firs we endeavour to enable every child to reach his or her full potential. An integrated approach to supporting children with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, co-ordination and other educational needs is one of the hallmarks of the school’s commitment to enabling all pupils to achieve their best. We have a well resourced, self-contained learning support department, staffed by a dedicated special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCo) and a dedicated learning support teaching assistant. They work with teachers and pupils to ensure individual needs are met. Support is provided in the class or in small group sessions and there may be pupils who receive individual tuition depending on their need. Individual Education Programmes are produced for children and additional work is given. Close communication is maintained with parents to ensure the best possible support is provided. Our SENCo also has oversight of those children who are considered exceptionally gifted or talented in some way, and ensures provision is made for them both in the classroom and through additional enrichment days.
