What says..

Goodwill and loyalty in spades from a convivial staff, both teaching and non-teaching, who greet you with genuine northern warmth and geniality. A four-wheel drive vehicle might be a must come winter; these are no-nonsense hardy folk for whom Barbours and wellies are de rigueur for a few months each year. No lack of academic rigour, regular testing so they know where they are but ‘not glued to their desks’ either, plenty of talk of breadth and balance across a traditional prep curriculum with added...

What the school says...

Westville House School was founded in 1960 and is a vibrant place with many new developments. We have three adventure playgrounds catering for both the older and younger children, plus a woodland classroom area. The school has its own playing field which can be used for hockey, football, cricket and athletics. All this reflects the school's continued commitment to its original ethos of a first class education for its children in a friendly and caring environment where the children gain confidence, achieve success and are prepared for life in the 21st century. ...Read more

What The Good Schools Guide says

Head

Since September 2023, Susan Walker. Previously worked at The Grammar School at Leeds.

Entrance

Most start around the age of 2 - there’s an excellent opportunity to try the place out first with Tiny Tots, free (yes, really) fun-filled Thursday afternoon sessions led by the onsite team. Non-selective throughout, older children seeking a place are invited for a taster day but no gruelling tests. One form entry throughout so places are limited by space; small number of bursaries available so worth enquiring.

Special Education Needs

Westville House School is a non-selective Prep School. We regard each child as an individual and have a flexible attitude to their requirements. We aim to identify and the support all children with special needs, inclusive of those who are considered to be ‘gifted’. Teachers work closely with parents to recognise special needs at as early as stage as possible. Once the need has been identified, the children are provided with a programme of study designed by the SENCO, in conjunction with the class or subject teacher. Support is provided in small groups, individually or in some cases through an outside agency. A dyslexia specialist teacher works in school on a part-time basis, and she provides the initial screening tests for reading problems and then individual tuition as prescribed by the SENCO involved, following a fuller test at the Dyslexia Institute in Leeds, York or Skipton. Other needs such as behavioural or co-ordination problems may include help and advice from the local health service, health visitors or help form the occupational therapy service. We also have experience of and provide for in school: Kline Felter Syndrome and Kippel-Trenauny Syndrome. 09-09
