We have met with Choice Home Tutoring’s staff. In addition, 23 clients and 32 tutors have completed an online survey (sent to 162 clients and 206 tutors) and we have followed this up with additional short phone interviews with at least eight of those surveyed.
When Jo Murphy (BA in human movement studies from Leeds, PGCE from Loughborough) gave up teaching to be a full-time mum to her three children, she caught wind of local parent grumbles about a dearth of decent tutors. So she decided to try to solve the problem herself and, in 2011, set up a tutor agency with her husband Colin (BSc in sports science, PGCE, both from Loughborough). Colin had been an assistant head and Jo had been head of department and head of year, both in secondary schools – so they knew what good teaching looks like, and they had good contacts. Jo is front of house, so to speak, while Colin oversees the ‘nitty gritty stuff’ like software, safeguarding and tutor recruitment and payments.
