What the school says

Why Michael Hall?

What does it take for a child to flourish in today’s ever-changing world? At Michael Hall Waldorf School, we believe children need to be confident, articulate, creative, self-reliant, imaginative, inquisitive and skilled at listening. These qualities are nurtured in every lesson, ensuring your child is equipped to thrive.

For over 100 years, Michael Hall has been a pioneer in holistic education, providing a balanced, inspiring, and rigorous environment for children from birth to 18 years. Our approach is rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy of nurturing the whole child—physically, emotionally, intellectually, culturally and spiritually—through a curriculum that evolves in harmony with your child’s natural developmental stages.

The heart of our curriculum

Art, music, drama, movement and outdoor learning carry equal importance to academic subjects. From learning to play musical instruments and performing in plays to exploring crafts such as bookbinding and iron forging, every aspect of our curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

Whole-class, mixed-ability teaching is central to our ethos, fostering a supportive and inclusive yet challenging environment where every child feels valued and can thrive to achieve their best. By meeting children where they are developmentally, we create joyful learning experiences that cultivate curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of discovery.

Learning beyond the classroom

Our campus with over 100 acres, set within the serene Ashdown Forest, offers an inspiring natural environment where students connect with the outdoors daily. Whether participating in forest school activities, gardening or exploring the surrounding woodland, these experiences foster a deep appreciation for the natural world while supporting academic and personal wellbeing.

A community of connection

Michael Hall is more than a school; it is a vibrant, inclusive community where parents, teachers and students work collaboratively to support every child’s growth. This sense of belonging and shared purpose enriches the educational experience, ensuring children feel supported, confident and ready to express their true selves.

Preparing for the future

Michael Hall graduates are known for their confidence, resourcefulness and social responsibility. Equipped with a strong sense of purpose and well-developed critical thinking skills, our alumni are highly sought after by top UK universities, including Russell Group institutions. Whether pursuing careers in the arts, sciences, business or environmental stewardship, they carry the values and skills gained at Michael Hall into their professional and personal lives.

Our vision and mission

We are committed to cultivating individuals who positively shape the world through creativity, empathy, wisdom, and self-confidence. By integrating physical activity, artistic expression, intellectual engagement and a connection to nature, Michael Hall nurtures the whole child, preparing them for a balanced, meaningful and fulfilling life.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

The inclusion department is dedicated to empowering students with diverse learning needs. Our support is tailored to each learner and may include one-on-one sessions, small group lessons, or in-class assistance. To ensure timely and effective intervention, we conduct a range of assessments throughout our students' educational journey, including cognitive profiling screenings in the middle school. We work closely with teachers to identify students who may benefit from additional support. Phonics, reading and mathematical learning is also supported and assessed in a range of ways, for our students who need extra assistance to fill gaps in learning. Teachers have up to date training on a range of learning needs, create individual support plans and design differentiated learning tasks, ensuring every student has the tools and opportunities to thrive within the curriculum. Our goal is to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment where all students can reach their full potential.
