SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

The Department has three specialist teachers who can offer one to one teaching for pupils statemented or at School Action Plus with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, General Learning Difficulties and Hearing Impairment. We have ten Teaching Assistants who support pupils with learning difficulties in the classroom. The SENco provides small group teaching for pupils at School Action who are below a reading age of ten and a spelling age of nine in our screening tests. We use the Macmillan Group reading Test and the vernon Spelling test to ascertain the reading and spelling ages of all our Year 7 pupils. This screening process often highlights difficulties which have not been apparent in the primary setting. We have four Learning Mentors whose role is to ensure a smooth transition for all year 7 pupils. The SEN department offers a nurturing environment for those vulnerable pupils who find the transition from a small primary school to a large secondary school overwhelming.
