SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

The Westgate School recognises that all pupils may have special educational needs at some stage in their school career and that it is the responsibility of all staff to ensure that these pupils have access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, irrespective of ability, disability, cognitive development, cultural/ethnic or other perceived differences.

The Learning Support Department is responsible for ensuring that these pupils’ needs are identified and met so that they are able to meet their potential and develop their self-esteem.

The special provision for gifted, talented and able children is made in the classroom because the best learning happens in the classroom. There are further opportunities for students to be engaged in a wide range of school exchanges to France, Germany, Spain and America, There is also a joint history trip to Bayeux in France. The School has forged strong links with Portsmouth University in a variety of different subjects to enable students to extend their learning. These subjects include history, geography, RE, science and languages. We also provide opportunities in school for pupils to take responsibility for their learning and to lead activities. Able mathematicians have the opportunity to study statistics and are also involved in the maths challenge. The able scientist has the opportunity to study triple science. Identified students work closely with employers such as IBM and Ford.
