SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

The Woodlands School is a co-educational special school for pupils aged 2–16 who are experiencing moderate learning difficulties, though we do have a significant number of pupils who have autism or similar communication difficulties. The school also has a Nursery and residential hostel accommodation for up to ten pupils. The full range of the National Curriculum is taught here, but in a way that is sympathetic to pupils with learning problems. At our school, we understand that some children learn at a slow pace and have a limited concentration span, that they may have a co-ordination problem or even sensory loss. We know that we must provide a warm accepting atmosphere so the pupils can have a positive and successful learning experience. Our resources too are special. Specialist teachers teach the pupils in small groups of approximately ten pupils with additional help from Teaching Assistants. This generous staffing means pupils receive a great deal of individual attention. A compact building encourages a family atmosphere and specialised equipment and a flexible organisation also improve the pupils’ scope for learning. The School Medical Service, the Learning Disabilities Team, the Educational Psychologist Service, Careers Education and Guidance and the Education Social Work Service all work closely with the school. Their help and advice can be easily sought. Altogether, The Woodlands School provides a very special environment of enhanced opportunities in which pupils can realise their educational potential and grow in self-esteem and confidence.
