What the school says

Yarrells Preparatory School and nursery is an independent day school for boys and girls aged between 2-11. Our school is housed in a Georgian mansion and surrounding classroom buildings encircled by the gardens, fields, sports courts, swimming pool and woodland of its own estate in the town of Upton, near Poole, Dorset.

In this beautiful environment, we have the scope to make the most of rich learning opportunities. We believe passionately in taking an individualised approach and that in our setting, guided by expert staff, we can nurture each child’s gift and help them develop the confidence to meet life’s challenges with spirit and determination.

Our curriculum has, at its heart, the development of knowledge values, skills, attitudes and behaviours required for children to flourish and succeed in an ever-changing world. Our pupils participate in an engaging curriculum that not only builds knowledge base but also inspires independent thinking and intellectual curiosity; they have opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills of leadership, collaboration, independence, critical thinking, evaluation and communication. It is the development of these skills that will take them well into their futures, both at senior school and beyond.

We are excited to announce that Yarrells nursery will be introducing a dedicated baby room from summer 2026, welcoming children from 6 months of age. This new provision will offer a warm, nurturing and purpose-designed environment for our youngest learners and will operate on an all-year-round basis.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Some children will have additional needs during their time at Yarrells. These special needs may encompass any specific physical, emotional, welfare or learning need that can affect an individual child’s ability to cope effectively in the learning environment. The need may arise at any time due to family or outside circumstances, or the child may enter with a special need that is not immediately apparent. It is important that such needs are identified, and discussions held with parents, to make arrangements to provide whatever help is needed. It must be emphasised that a child who is gifted has special needs as much a child who is having acute difficulties with learning. Only a very small number of children in the school are in the category of requiring special support but identification of those who do is important.

We have an active, rigorous and effective system for identification in place at Yarrells. What we do is very much in line with the DCSF Code of Practice on the identification and assessment of special educational needs.
