Offers the full country prep experience, plus the targeted maths and English and emphasis on self-esteem that these boys are crying out for. The majority go on to top independent schools, while others opt for softer schools including the new senior school. ‘All schools see my son’s dyslexia, but this one saw his potential too,’ voiced one parent. ‘It’s like they flipped a coin – just unbelievable,’ said another.

Our view

A country prep that supports boys with weaker working memories and processing speeds through the Common Entrance, and gets their self-esteem back on track. It achieves this by providing double the amount of English and maths that other schools offer

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Bruern Abbey is a mainstream school which caters exclusively for neurodiverse pupils and those with special educational needs. Whilst giving its pupils a ‘mainstream experience’ (competitive sport, school trips and residentials, plenty of outside space), inclusion via adaptation runs through everything we do. We minimise interventions in which pupils are removed from lessons, in contrast with the majority of schools. Instead, we ensure pupils' needs are met within the classroom; our small class sizes and knowledgeable and patient teachers employ teaching strategies that directly counter the challenges created by working memory, processing and attention demands. We are, by design, a small school, meaning that staff truly get to know the boys, understand their interests and their way of learning. A culture of building on strengths to develop resilience means pupils work with staff to develop a variety of individualised skills and strategies which can be applied in the classroom, public examination and beyond. Inclusion does not preclude ambition: our pupils experience success in examinations and go on to study at their school or sixth form of choice. The school understands the importance of excellent pastoral care and pupils’ happiness as a prerequisite for engagement and success in academic studies. Pupils often join us with shattered confidence and the school’s staff work painstakingly to rebuild this.
