Copthill pupils are not feral children in the woods – these children are getting a very good education, as reflected in the school’s recent ISA junior school of the year award. They are streetwise (well, country-wise), independent, free thinkers. Children come to school early to feed the animals and muck them out because they want to, not because they have to. The atmosphere at Copthill is happy, welcoming and relaxed – you feel it as soon as you walk through the door. The last word must go to one mother who says it all: ‘I wish I’d gone to school here.’

Our view
Copthill firmly embraces outdoor learning. ‘On warm summer days children should not be cooped up inside. I did not think that this was how children should be educated,’ says the principal. But this does not mean it’s all fun and games – far from it.
