What the school says

Whilst ensuring an excellent academic experience, King Edward VI School also offers a diverse and exciting co-curricular programme. Pupils and staff participate in fieldwork, charitable and sporting visits across the globe, from Mexico and South Africa to Canada and the Caribbean, providing opportunities for cultural exchange, personal growth and global awareness. These experiences broaden perspectives and help foster a sense of independence and responsibility beyond the classroom.

Life at King Edward’s is further enriched by the many music, drama and sporting opportunities on offer. These activities remain an integral part of school life, with pupils actively encouraged to explore their interests and fulfil their potential in each of these areas. Many talented students go on to perform or compete at exceptionally high levels — whether that’s representing their country in sport, performing with national orchestras and choirs, or gaining recognition at prestigious youth drama festivals.

The school’s music department is thriving, with a wide range of ensembles and choirs catering for all levels and styles. From chamber music and jazz groups to large orchestras and choral concerts, pupils are given the chance to develop their musical talents and perform regularly at school events and in the wider community. Weekly instrumental lessons, composition opportunities and partnerships with professional musicians further enhance the experience.

Drama also plays a key role in the cultural life of the school. Productions range from Shakespearean classics to modern plays and original student-devised pieces, with performances staged in both our fully equipped theatre and in more intimate studio settings. Many pupils choose to take part not just as performers, but as directors, designers and technicians, developing a wide range of skills and confidence in creative collaboration.

Sport at King Edward’s is inclusive and ambitious, with a strong tradition of excellence across a range of disciplines. Competitive fixtures run throughout the year, supported by expert coaching and excellent facilities, including all-weather pitches, a fitness suite, sports hall and extensive playing fields. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to participate, build resilience and develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.

Leadership, service and character development underpin the school’s ethos. Whether through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, student-led societies, mentoring schemes or environmental initiatives, pupils are given real responsibility and are empowered to make a difference in their school and wider communities.

King Edward VI School is a place where talents are discovered, passions are pursued and young people grow into confident, well-rounded individuals
