Undoubtedly at the forefront of online schooling, MVA is helping to reshape the educational landscape by providing a more inclusive, flexible and appealing learning experience for those who – for a multitude of reasons – grapple with the constraints of more traditional schooling. Genuinely suited to all abilities, the school also excels at pastoral care, as well as providing that holy grail of online schooling – a genuine sense of community and belonging.

Teaching & learning

Aim is for students to prepare for their whole future, not just exam day. So, alongside the focus on reaching potential in GCSEs and A levels (and many families report a hike in grades ‘beyond our wildest expectations’), the school also encourages

Learning support & SEN

Among the best we’ve seen for an online school. A good job too as over half (54 per cent) of students are on the SEND register, covering four main areas of need: communication and interaction; cognition and learning; SEMH; and sensory and/or physical

Trips are the standout point here – ‘absolutely brilliant’, say parents. At least twice each term, students are invited to the likes of Bletchley Park, Go Ape, theatre trips, ice skating etc – and they’re now organised for individual year groups, key

No physical facilities or opportunity to kick a ball about with others. But there’s a fitness group that sets weekly challenges (running certain distances, swimming, horse riding, rowing, etc) – they meet weekly to hold each other to account. School

Ethos & heritage

It is the perfect school for modern times - combining smart technology and engaging online resources with one-to-one support, active group learning and exciting multi-disciplinary projects.

We offer pupils the flexibility to learn from the comfort of their home, anywhere in the world, while ensuring they develop the social skills required to live fulfilling lives and succeed in the workplaces of the future.

The academy was founded in October 2020 by Minerva Tutors, the UK's leading home-schooling and private tuition agency. We have just over 1100 students, but our small classes ensure that every student has a personal mentor who they meet once per week for a pastoral care and academic progress check-in.

The academy is the culmination of Minerva's desire to help as many children as possible benefit from the advantages a private education can offer. The school offers a bespoke and enriching education for each child, aiming to make it as affordable as possible – and we are passionate about making the curriculum as relevant as possible for the modern world.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Minerva’s Virtual Academy is committed to providing the best possible care and education to its pupils and to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We welcome those who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and are fully committed to recognizing, comprehending and fulfilling these needs during their time with us. We work closely with parents and pupils to identify where care is needed and we tailor our provision accordingly. We have a number of teaching staff, including our mentors, who have specialist SEND experience. “Canvas”, our e-learning platform, has an accessible interface and is designed so that pupils of all capabilities can access the GCSE curriculum and learn at their own pace, in surroundings that are comfortable to them. Many of our pupils feel it offers them a safe space with the added benefit of learning from the comfort and safety of their own home. Our class sizes are small thus ensuring personalised attention, and our mentors and all our teachers are made aware from the start of any special requirements for each pupil.
