Teaching & learning

From its earliest years, public exams have been an important feature of a North London education. (The school’s founder fought for girls to be able to sit exams at time when many thought them too fragile!) There was an awkward moment during the

Arts & extracurricular

A fundamental strand of a North London education is helping girls ‘develop fulfilling lives’ – ‘It’s depressing when the sole purpose of education is just to prepare you for work,’ says the head. ‘It’s to prepare you for life’ – and the

Sport

North London has traditionally been a solidly, but not overwhelmingly, sporty school, but the head – concerned that too many girls drop games in adolescence – has shifted the dial. ‘We’re now aiming to be in the top five girls’ schools for sport in

Founded in 1850 in Camden Town by the formidable Miss (Frances Mary) Buss, one of the most influential pioneers of academic education for girls. (She also established Camden School for Girls, with which North London continues to share Founder’s Day).

Pastoral care, inclusivity & discipline

The school has an attentive approach to pastoral care, with each form allocated two tutors. (‘Having a second is really beneficial, and we think carefully about how they’re paired.’) Younger pupils are given talks about emotional regulation;

What the school says

North London Collegiate School is an intellectual and co-curricular powerhouse which wears its success lightly and with a delightful sense of individuality.

Our school motto, Spe Laboramus (We work in hope), has long been a guiding principle at NLCS, reflecting our belief in perseverance and ambition. It remains a core value of our community today, with our headmistress frequently signing off messages with ‘We work in hope’ and our philanthropic efforts embodied in the Work in Hope Fund. We often say that our pupils are successful because they have an infectious love of learning and this drives their work ethic. They are also pupils who enjoy being busy and purposeful. It’s part of the NLCS experience. The same can be said of our staff. There is never any shortage of applicants for internal roles and the main challenge is fitting into the Calendar all the amazing events the staff run. We run a boarding school programme but in a day school.

Looking ahead, our new strapline, Making Waves Since 1850, signals an exciting evolution. While our motto remains an integral part of our identity, Making Waves encapsulates the bold, dynamic spirit of NLCS today. It speaks to the energy of our students—fearless, purpose-driven individuals who approach the world with curiosity and intellectual rigour.

This fresh perspective reflects the ambition of our entire community. With an infectious love of learning and a drive to make a difference, both students and staff are shaping a future that is as inspiring as our past. We are not just embracing change – we are leading it.
