We often hear that a school is one big family, but this time we were convinced: a caring community from the head right through to the pet guinea pigs. Riverston School provides bespoke teaching strategies and nurture for small classes of vulnerable children by understanding their backgrounds and special needs. Sensitive staff play to the children’s strengths and adjust their approach to their needs, whether it is A level maths or riding on the bus: ‘It’s like a transformation you wouldn’t believe,’ a mum said. ‘I feel I’ve got my life back.’

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

We are an independent mainstream school with a large SEN provision with the majority of our pupils having a diagnosis of SEN or disability. We are a small nurturing setting with currently around 6 – 9 pupils per class and at least 1 Learning support assistant within each class alongside the class teacher. Our high staff to pupil ration allows us to better cater to of our pupils and ensures we are delivering continuous support across the main areas of need. We have therapy very much integrated into our setting and have onsite therapists following a multi-disciplinary approach to learning to facilitate this. In house we have a diverse SEN team consisting of Speech and language and Occupational therapists, a dyslexia teacher, a drama therapist and soon to have onsite ELSA support working with pupils to support the provision stated within their plans or via referral by staff members.

Pupils mostly access the mainstream secondary curriculum however we do have a parallel curriculum which focuses on gaps within the primary key stage 2 curriculum to support pupils who are unable to access the secondary national curriculum.

We offer a wide broad curriculum creating a bespoke plan to ensure all of our pupils progression is celebrated though a number of qualifications such as GCSE’s, BTEC’s, ASDAN, Entry Level courses, Functional skills courses, AS and A-level courses and the list continues.
