A terrific boys’ boarding school in a breathtaking golden setting. Sherborne, with its strong sense of community, good academic results and opportunities galore on all fronts, succeeds in combining the best of ancient and modern without diminishing either. Now that its close ties with Sherborne Girls are formalised, parents debating the merits of single sex versus co-ed schools for their sons reckon it offers the best of both worlds.

Why read our school review?

Ethos & heritage

A beautiful school in the heart of a safe, well-heeled Dorset market town. Former poet laureate Sir John Betjeman once described the town as looking ‘like a junior university city, with every other house an old college’ and it’s true. It was founded

Mobile phone policy

A clear mobile phone policy is a really important part of modern schooling. This school has provided us with their policy.

Mobile phone policy

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Boys will have access to their work mobile devices each day to use during lessons. Access to additional mobile devices (e.g. mobile phones) is different depending upon the year group of the boy and increases as they progress through the school and learn to manage them more effectively over time. All devices are handed in by the third, fourth and fifth forms before bedtime.

The times when additional mobile devices are also accessible to boys again, depends on year group, but generally cover allotted periods during the evenings and weekends.

What the school says

Founded in 1550, Sherborne Boys is a leading independent full boarding school for boys in Dorset, with a direct train to London. Our unique partnership with Sherborne Girls offers the best of both worlds: single-sex education with social, co-curricular and academic collaborations. Shirburnians are kind and compassionate yet eager to make their mark on the world. We have been recognised as ‘Best of the Best’ for our co-curricular provision by the Week. Among our notable alumni are Hugh Bonneville, Jeremy Irons, Chris Martin, Alan Turing and Tom Bradby.

What is this?

Facilitating A levels are ones that are commonly needed for entry to leading universities. They are: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, further mathematics, geography, history, English literature and classical or modern languages. The % of pupils achieving AAB or higher may therefore decrease if many pupils have opted not to take two or more of the facilitating subjects mentioned.
