The system of merits and demerits is well understood by students, and they say they feel motivated to accrue badges and rewards - ranging from Haribo’s to places on school trips. They feel the system is fair and works well. Behaviour is ‘good’, agree parents and pupils - and bullying is dealt with quickly, ‘quashed’ say parents, although they struggle to recall examples. All-through school (for example 3-18 years). - An all-through school covers junior and senior education. It may start at 3 or 4, or later, and continue through to 16 or 18. Some all-through schools set exams at 11 or 13 that pupils must pass to move on.

Since 2013, Kirsty Mackenzie, who attended a state school in Darlington. Physics degree from Leeds University, PGCE from Durham. After eight years teaching in a Middlesbrough state school, took the plunge into the independent sector. Joined the school in 2005 as head of physics, with subsequent roles including head of science, head of year and curriculum deputy. She knows the school inside out.
