Special Education Needs
Heriot's has an all through Support for Learning department which means that our staff know the children very well and transitions are fully supported. Our early intervention programme identifies any early gaps and follows up with a tailored programme that works in partnership with parents. We have an in-house Educational Psychologist who initiated this early learning programme and continues to develop and extend it. We are one of the very few schools who offer this. Our team of nine work with pupils 1:1 and in small groups. We also provide cooperative teaching in language/English and Maths from P1 up to S3. We focus closely on skills development – providing support with spelling, reading and numeracy. We have a part-time speech and language specialist and a specialist teacher who works with young people affected by Autistic Spectrum Disorder, supporting them socially, emotionally and academically. The SEN department works closely with class and subject teachers. We offer frequent training events to keep all of our staff up to date with current legislation and best practice.
