In the space of one lunch time we watched boys hunting for creepy crawlies in bug hotels, singing with gusto in the junior choir, planing chess boards in the DT suite, creating games in the ICT suite, building sets for the school play, having a good old fashioned kick about. Super work of exceptional quality, themed to ignite passionate creativity amongst the all-male cohort by their inspiring male head of art (who doubles up as games teacher), festoons the interiors. We loved the Viking shields crafted in DT and the fabulous gargoyle masks...

All-through school (for example 3-18 years). - An all-through school covers junior and senior education. It may start at 3 or 4, or later, and continue through to 16 or 18. Some all-through schools set exams at 11 or 13 that pupils must pass to move on.

Since 2013, Ian Silk (40s), previously deputy head of Bishops Stortford Junior School and former housemaster at Ardingly College. An English and drama specialist, brims with enthusiasm about all aspects of the school – most particularly the spectacular new theatre (2015) shared with the upper school and the town. Married to Sarah, with two sons both at the school – ‘they are chalk and cheese,’ he told us, ‘but the school is brilliant for both of them.’ Knows most boys by name – lots of heads do but this is a large prep – and has lunch with all new joiners in small groups.
