Special Education Needs

•DMCSC is an inclusive comprehensive school of 1400 11-16 students striving to give all children with learning and behaviour difficulties the best opportunity to develop their abilities. •Pupils with SEN are mainly taught in mainstream classes whenever possible. •There are approximately 250 pupils on the SEN list and 38 pupils with statements. •There are 4 Learning and Language Support Teachers and the equivalent of 13 Teaching Assistants support these pupils in the classroom. •Pupils in Years 7 and 8 with identified literacy needs are withdrawn for additional small group work. •Older pupils with longer term specific literacy or behavioural needs are withdrawn for additional individual support. •Teaching Assistants work in the Learning Support Base at lunchtime to help with homework or GCSE coursework. •Teaching Assistants and Support Teachers work in the Achievement Centre with students who have behavioural, attendance or emotional difficulties. •Appropriate Access Arrangements are put in place for external exams such as SATs and GCSEs. •97.9% of pupils gained 5 or more grade A*-G GCSEs and 98.7% gained one or more grade A*-G GCSEs. •The school maintains close links with outside support agencies and the LEA who are continuing to make alterations to the buildings and site to maximise access.

If there are more applicants to a school than it has places for, who gets in is determined by which applicants best fulfil the admissions criteria.

Admissions criteria are often complicated, and may change from year to year. The best source of information is usually the relevant local authority website, but once you have set your sights on a school it is a good idea to ask them how they see things panning out for the year that you are interested in.

Many schools admit children based on distance from the school or a fixed catchment area. For such schools, the cut-off distance will vary from year to year, especially if the school give priority to siblings, and the pattern will be of a central core with outliers (who will mostly be siblings). Schools that admit on the basis of academic or religious selection will have a much more scattered pattern.
