The boys we saw were smiling, bright-faced and relaxed with, seemingly, an easy relationship with their attendant adults. We liked the junior forum board which asked 'have you got ideas for improving life at KCJS?' and felt this was typical of a school which encourages its denizens to think, express themselves and enjoy school. All-through school (for example 3-18 years). - An all-through school covers junior and senior education. It may start at 3 or 4, or later, and continue through to 16 or 18. Some all-through schools set exams at 11 or 13 that pupils must pass to move on.

Since 2006, Dr Gerard Silverlock (50s), affable, articulate and clever; despite having spent most of his career as a senior historian in senior schools (Millfield et al), a natural prep school head. Did his PhD on European disarmament 1918-25. Previously head of Aberdour in Banstead. Has four children of his own and is clearly held in much affection by his charges, who follow him about, demanding he sign their commended work, and seem determined that they – and not we, on our visit – are what matters. With which we entirely agree. Parents say he's 'approachable and easy to get on with'.


English, maths and reasoning tests and all 7+ and 8+ candidates are interviewed. Beyond that, those 'whose performance in the written papers suggests that they could benefit from the education which we offer'...
