First form to fourth form pupils hand their phones in during morning registration. Phones are collected at the end of the day. Fifth and sixth formers may only use their phones in lessons, if directed to by their teacher, for educational purposes. They must not use their phones at other times. Prep school pupils may bring phones to school if they travel on a school bus, but they must deposit them in the morning and collect them at the end of the day. Concessions are in place for children with medical conditions whose access to their mobile phone is a necessity.

The Learning Support Department is a resource which exists to strengthen and support learning across the whole ability range. This encompasses a very wide range of issues. As a consequence, our response must be a flexible one which includes a variety of approaches to the varying needs of our pupils. Our role also requires us to support the staff and to disseminate good practice throughout the school.

Our main teaching and learning objectives can be summarised as follows: first and foremost we are here to improve the skills of those students who have difficulties acquiring the basics of literacy and numeracy. There is a need to recognise, however, that there comes a time when other needs predominate, and there is a gradual move towards the teaching of basic skills through other, curriculum based tasks. We work on study skills, individual learning styles and highlight strengths and the application of strategies. We look to improve: thinking skills; time management and planning; revision and exam techniques; and knowledge and use of ICT. At a personal level we encourage: self-awareness and self-analysis; organisation; acceptance of constructive criticism; pro-active problem solving and the discussion of issues of importance to the individual. Additionally we seek to boost confidence and self-esteem.
