We feel the school has rather sat on its laurels in recent years, having no private competition, but that is all changing. School is well aware of local competition from the grammars and an excellent academy in the city, and is working hard to raise the profile and standards. The school prides itself on its pastoral care, has excellent facilities, gets solid results and – its real strength – has small class sizes.

Why read our school review?

Unlike other websites, schools can't pay to be included in The Good Schools Guide. This means our review of this school is independent, critical and fair, and written with parents' best interests at heart.

About 15 per cent leave at the end of year 6, many to state grammar schools. School aware of this and does practice 11-plus papers. In 2023, 63 per cent left after GCSEs, but school says this is an anomaly and it’s usually half this number.

What is this?

Facilitating A levels are ones that are commonly needed for entry to leading universities. They are: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, further mathematics, geography, history, English literature and classical or modern languages. The % of pupils achieving AAB or higher may therefore decrease if many pupils have opted not to take two or more of the facilitating subjects mentioned.

Teaching & learning

Solid results for a non-selective school. High flyers encouraged, less able nurtured. French, German and Spanish on offer at GCSE. One language for all, a few do two but, disappointingly, not many. iPads being rolled out for all. Plenty of computers

Pastoral care, inclusivity & discipline

‘They know what they can get away with,’ said one parent, ‘and if they cross boundaries there is retribution.’ All parents supported the school’s stance on discipline. ‘My child was given detention for something pretty innocuous. But they knew the
