A school that lives up to its local reputation as the best in the area, with an exceptionally popular head. The boarding element brings a sense of community and – unusually for a boarding school – reflects modern Britain in its social and ethnic diversity. With the ever-improving academics, a fabulous extracurricular offering and spacious site, it’s no wonder parents increasingly choose it over traditional independent Midlands boarding schools. Not for those who yearn for something more academically or socially exclusive.

Why read our school review?

Unlike other websites, schools can't pay to be included in The Good Schools Guide. This means our review of this school is independent, critical and fair, and written with parents' best interests at heart.

Teaching & learning

Rugby is king, according to pupils and parents, though head says he’s ‘never been convinced we’re a rugby school’. Either way, the school is well able to hold its own against the large independent schools (both the first and U15 XV won the vase tier

One of those sprawling campuses that you wonder how on earth the youngsters get to know their way around so quickly – and yet they do (‘in about three days,’ reckoned one). Founded over 350 years ago, the school is a mixture of highly atmospheric

Pastoral care, inclusivity & discipline
