Gentle testing of numeracy and literacy accompanies a two-day taster session for the junior school. Non-selective with children joining at every stage. A ‘surge’ in new starters usually in year 5 seeking to avoid exam pressures in other settings.

Teaching & learning

Lessons were calm with students fully engaged and hands shooting up to answer any questions. Children in the junior school were astoundingly eloquent and self-reflective, explaining to us what they had been working on and what skills they had used.

Mobile phone policy

A clear mobile phone policy is a really important part of modern schooling. This school has provided us with their policy.

Mobile phone policy

Provided by the school and not part of our review

We are proud to be a no-mobile-phone school. Students in years 7-11 are not permitted to have phones during the school day. Sixth form students may have mobile phones, but they must remain out of sight and only be used in the sixth form centre. If a parent requests that their child have access to their phone for travelling to and from school, they must bring it to reception in the morning and collect it at the end of the school day.

SEN overview

Sidcot School is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

If a student has a greater difficulty in learning than most students of the same age, then they may need special educational provision through targeted intervention sessions. Our learning support department provides personalised one-to-one or small group lessons designed to support students’ ability to access and participate in the high-quality teaching and learning available throughout the school. There is an additional charge for these sessions.

Sidcot is highly experienced in providing support to students with mild learning needs. Learning support staff have qualifications in supporting pupils with specific learning difficulties alongside their teaching qualifications. We have experience in supporting mild conditions, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and social communication needs. All pupils who attend Sidcot are capable and able to access the curriculum of the school.

If a student has been identified as having a special educational need, an individual education plan will identify learning goals and outcomes to be achieved, along with appropriate learning support strategies. This is shared with pupils and parents and is reviewed biannually. Learning support progress is included in school reports and parents are able to discuss their child’s progress at parents’ evening.
