In one of the playrooms, there is a fabulous poster of St Ignatius saying, ‘Go forth and set the world on fire.’ These children are being emboldened, their intellect and sensibilities refined, to do just that.

Although day pupils greatly dominate, this is a boarding school in outlook: most day pupils stay for prep until 7pm. All mix in ‘playrooms’ (year groups) though they are also members of ‘lines’, which are akin to houses in that they encompass all age

SEN overview

Stonyhurst St Mary's Hall is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Currently at college we have 160 pupils with a diagnosed SEN need. The majority of these pupils have a lower level diagnosed specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia. We also support pupils with ASD and ADHD and support for all pupils with a diagnosis is triaged according to individual need and presentation. The SENDCo will work with key staff, parents and pupils to adapt timetables, where applicable. This allows pupils the opportunity to attend learning development sessions, and work towards ensuring their individual needs are being met. The learning development centre and its bank of staff, deliver a range of interventions to support the child's individual need, from one-to-one support to small group support. Again, according to year group and need, intervention sessions will range from core subject support, individual diagnosis interventions, to study support and improvement of exam technique. The SEND staff are also allocated to support pupils in class in the core subjects and in a wider range of subjects where deemed relevant. Working in class with pupils, affords us the opportunity to embed learning within our department, supporting the academic success of our pupils.

Stonyhurst support pupils with Educational Health and Care Plans and the SENDCo works closely with the local authority and specialist providers to ensure that the required level of provision is being met for these pupils. The SENDCo will facilitate and organise specialist providers in school for pupils requiring a higher level of support, than sits outside our school SEND offer.
