A school, whose founding motto (now consigned to history) in 1884 was ‘Be good sweet maid and let who will be clever’, is now a school that resists any attempts to pigeonhole girls into one role or another. The girls here are encouraged to be good and clever but they are also brave, kind, sporty, creative and feisty. The atmosphere is vibrant and happy. When asked if they could identify the best thing about their school, one pupil pondered awhile before announcing, ‘The girls. And the teachers. All of them.’

Our view

Set on a busy junction, part of the extensive Surbiton school campus (along with the boys’ prep and Surbiton High Senior School), the girls’ prep (opened in 1994) is airy and practical and benefits from an impressive extension, completed in 2018.

SEN overview

Surbiton High Girls’ Preparatory School is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

A baseline assessment is undertaken when the girls join the school in Reception. This is followed by an end of Reception assessment. Children are also screened in Year 1 and Year 2 for dyslexic type problems. If a child is causing concern at any point, then individual assessments are also carried out. When necessary, a child might also be referred to an Educational Psychologist. If Learning Support is given to a pupil, as a result of assessments, then this is usually in the form of weekly 1:1 lessons or sometimes small group lessons.

The School ethos is one of embracing a pupil's individuality, helping her to grow in self-confidence and self-worth. Those pupils with specific learning difficulties are no exception and are supported in a caring and practical way.
