Learning is so fun that they barely realise they’re learning at all. Yet they leave at 11, more than ready for the senior school. ‘Warm, family-oriented and all-through, what’s not to like?’ said one parent. Links with the cathedral clinches the deal for many.

Our view

We arrived to what is surely the king of junior school activities, a treasure hunt. ‘Sorry, can’t stop!’ apologised one laser-focused boy breathlessly as he raced around the school field and scanned the wooden play ship before legging it to the

SEN overview

The King's Gloucester Junior School is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

Around 25 per cent (and growing) of pupils have SEN. ‘Some of them would not meet the criteria in other settings,’ explained the junior SENCo (supported by an assistant), ‘and some come here specifically because their previous school couldn’t help – in fact, sometimes we’re their third school.’ Dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism most common, with more specific needs including non-verbal dyspraxia and cerebral palsy. Most support takes place in individual or small group lessons (included in fees) in a dedicated on-site cottage with its own garden and pet tortoises – handily located next to forest school, and they arrange visits too, eg a farm to support emotional wellbeing and local community cafes to support social skills. ‘There’s a huge amount of good will – they are much more receptive than most schools we spoke to and willing to adapt, for instance not expecting our son to sit for long periods in the cathedral,’ said a parent. External speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, education psychologists brought in as required. One EHCP when we visited.
