The education landscape in Wimbledon is changing with many single sex local schools becoming co-ed or with plans to do so. WHS remains confident that girls thrive in an all-girls environment. The school is an academic one but learning at WHS junior school is ‘still for the fun of it’, whether that is hunting for differently shaped leaves (and conkers as a bonus) or engaging in Socratic debate. Significantly, the ballot for girls at 4+ has made no discernible difference to the attainment of each cohort at the end of year 6. ‘There is,’ said one parent, ‘a tremendous sense of care and great pastoral approach alongside great amenities and endless opportunities.’ All with an eye to a smooth transition to the senior school.

Entrance
School has dispensed with selection at 4+ and opted for a ballot instead. Roughly 300 applicants for 48 places. No need to register early but siblings get priority. Fierce competition for occasional places thereafter (‘roughly one per year group’).

Exit
This is an 'all-through' school. Transfer to senior school ‘guaranteed’ but not always ‘advised’. Conversations take place well in advance if necessary but ‘it’s rare’. One or two each year head elsewhere.

Mobile phone policy
A clear mobile phone policy is a really important part of modern schooling. This school has provided us with their policy.
Mobile phone policy
No mobile phones to be used. Only pupils who walk home from school unaccompanied are permitted to bring a mobile phone into school; this applies to pupils in year 6. On arrival in school, the phone is turned off. The phone is handed in to the class teacher who will store the phone securely in the junior school office for the duration of the school day. Pupils will not be given access to their mobile phone at any point in the school day. Mobile phones are not to be taken on residential visits.

Our view
The academic side of things is ‘pacy’ but it is very much ‘not a hothouse’ we were told. The school describes the approach as one of ‘playful scholarship’. Play is valued and, alongside that, each year group focuses on one philosophical question each
