We have met with Inspiring Tutors’ staff. In addition, 25 clients and 20 tutors completed an on-line survey (sent to 70 clients and 63 tutors) and we followed this up with additional short phone interviews with some of those surveyed.
Surprisingly grounded, given that their website is packed with awe-inspiring Oxbridge photos and highly polished children in smart school blazers (subtext: ‘we are as high calibre as they come’). Friendly and down-to-earth co-founder and CEO, Siyu (Sherry) Zhang, runs the show from offices near Tower Bridge (‘complete with teaching rooms for hire – a godsend for families who prefer not to be taught at home,’ according to one tutor we spoke to, though nobody’s actually used them since the pandemic). The other co-founder (and director), Hao Li, looks after the money side of things, while the remaining five staff (who cover everything from marketing to business development, recruitment and client relationships) are mainly home-based from various London locations.
Sherry – a bubbly and youthful fast-talker – set up the company in 2017 after being a grateful recipient of tutoring herself when she arrived in the UK from China as a teenager. Her tutors (a retired teacher from Eton and an Oxford lecturer, no less) were her role models during her adolescent years – ‘they shaped who I am today,’ she told us. While at university she gave a helping hand to her younger friends doing GCSE and A level maths and loved it so much that when she graduated she taught English and maths as a volunteer in one of the poorest provinces of China. ‘This is when I realised I wanted to make a difference to children who are hungry for knowledge. I knew I might not be the best teacher but I could create a platform where we could provide the best.’

We examined the value-added from KS2 to GCSE for 2022 to see which state selective grammar schools added the most value to their offspring. A note of caution - the more highly selective a grammar school, the less scope there will be to add value.
Grammar schools are state-funded, academically selective senior schools. The education a child receives at grammar school is paid for by the state unlike at private schools which provide education for a fee. There are currently around 163 located in 36 English local authorities, with around 167,000 pupils between them. Northern Ireland has a further 67 grammar schools, but there are none in Wales or Scotland. A word of caution: there are private schools that have the word 'grammar' in their name but this is purely for historical reasons.
At specialist music, dance or performing arts schools, the arts aren't optional extras. They’re intrinsic to the school curriculum. Students are expected to fit in high level training and hours of practice alongside a full academic provision. It's a lot to ask any child to take on, but for those with exceptional performing ability this kind of education can be transformative.
