For children who don’t sit easily in large or high-pressure mainstream schools, or special schools, Bredon can feel like a breath of fresh air – and the emphasis on being outdoors means children get this in the literal sense too. Great for dyslexics, but – increasingly so - for any child from the anxious and timid to the hale and hearty who prefer learning with tools in hand and mud on feet. Either way, expect quirkiness with classmates and be warned it might mean a house move or considering boarding. Three word summary? Gordonstoun with dyslexia.

SEN statement

Individual and individualised dyslexia-friendly teaching and learning is at the heart of the Bredon School philosophy. Bredon provides learning support for pupils across a range of formats from targeted small group and 1:1 sessions, to in-class assistance. With highly qualified and experienced staff the aim is to ensure that all pupils achieve their full potential regardless of any difficulties they may face. Teaching staff, together with the dedicated Learning Support team, are able to help pupils with dyslexia and dyscalculia across the ability range. The School strongly believes that all pupils should engage in a full curriculum however, pupils with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia may withdraw from non-core subjects enabling them to focus on identified areas of difficulty such as reading, writing and maths. Study skills and revision techniques are also focused upon as pupils approach examination periods. ICT is also at the heart of Bredon’s approach, with a Google Chromebook for every child, with voice-activated software having a tremendous impact upon standards. In addition to Specific Learning Sessions (SLS), Bredon School can also provide expertise from a fully qualified Speech and Language team and Occupational Therapy. Bredon School operates a school-wide commitment that all pupils are taught in a dyslexia friendly format, using a variety of multi-sensory techniques, further supported by assistive technology wherever possible. Pupils are supported in such a manner that they are equipped with strategies, procedures and the confidence to work as independently as possible within the classroom. All teaching staff hold, or are working towards an accredited British Dyslexia Association qualification. SEN qualified specialist teachers are always on hand to ensure a seamless relationship between themselves and the subject teachers. The Learning Support Department occupies Garden Cottage which is located at the heart of the School. A well-resourced facility with computers, books, games and activities for the support of those with specific learning difficulties. Staff within Garden Cottage offer an open-door policy so that staff and pupils may drop in at any time.
