Excellent value for money, something we don’t often say in our line of work; sending your child here will genuinely set them up. But also a place that is human in its outlook: healthy, kind, and vigorous in its quest for excellence. As one student put it, ‘I love it at this school, and I feel privileged to be here.’

Why read our school review?

What is this?

Facilitating A levels are ones that are commonly needed for entry to leading universities. They are: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, further mathematics, geography, history, English literature and classical or modern languages. The % of pupils achieving AAB or higher may therefore decrease if many pupils have opted not to take two or more of the facilitating subjects mentioned.

Teaching & learning

That most refreshing of things in this county, a non-selective school and pleased to be so. The school slogan is ‘think differently’, and from juniors up to GCSEs, teaching is delivered via themes, eg ‘coffee, tea and chocolate’, ‘war and peace’ o

Sport

Under new leadership, sport here is impressively varied and the approach is entirely inclusive: recently every single pupil in years 7 and 8 played in at least eight fixtures for the school, making this an excellent place for children who want to

Ethos & heritage

Built on the site of the 12th-century Benedictine St Martin’s Priory, Dover College was founded in 1871 by a group of local businessmen who wanted the town to have its own public school. In 1958 the then-headmaster Alec Peterson opened an internat

Pastoral care, inclusivity & discipline

In many ways, the teacher we spoke to summed up the appeal of this likeable school as we strolled across the beautiful old college green, dotted with junior pupils having a kickabout: ‘In three years, I’ve never had to raise my voice. The children

What the school says

The school is dynamic and small enough to provide a disciplined and caring environment, with small class sizes giving pupils the opportunity to fulfil their potential within a friendly community. Most pupils achieve more than their potential suggests on entry. 'Dover College believes in developing confidence and individual talents'.

SEN overview

Dover College is a mainstream school. The school may provide support for students with special educational needs as detailed below. If you require more information on conditions the school can support, we encourage you to contact the school directly.

SEN statement

Provided by the school and not part of our review

In the Senior School, we have a small Individual Needs Department consisting of two staff specialising in mild dyslexia and literacy difficulties, maths anxiety/maths difficulties and dyscalculia. In the prep school, SEN support is provided by our SENDCo. A range of other needs may be accommodated, but each applicant is considered on an individual basis. Support in class is provided by the class teacher and small class sizes, we do not provide Teaching Assistants. Accessibility is limited on the main site, which has some historic and listed buildings that cannot be adapted easily.

Dover College has an Individual Needs department, fully staffed by trained professionals, which provides one-to-one withdrawal lessons for pupils with not only specific needs (eg dyslexia) but also those who need a little extra support for self-esteem, organisational difficulties, etc. We are accredited by CReSTeD. We also have a fully staffed international study centre (ISC) which offers small class tuition for overseas pupils entering the school. Pupils in the ISC participate fully in mainstream lessons when they are competent English users, and are always full members of the school for all other activities.
