Tutoring is de rigueur for those trying to get into the grammars and selective private schools in Buckinghamshire. If any parent tells you otherwise, it probably means they don’t want to share their tutor. Schools will tell you they actively discourage tutoring but listen to them at your peril too – your bright button will be up against other, much better prepared, bright buttons who are as familiar with past papers as they are with Harry Potter books. Group lessons from organisations such as Marie Redmond and TeachItRight run in local community centres most weeknights and on Saturdays. Sign up early to secure a place. Primary schools are not allowed to formally prepare pupils for the grammar school Transfer Test or 11+, so pupils are tutored outside of school throughout year 5, usually in small classes run by specialist local companies.

• Grammar schools in the UK

  Grammar schools are state-funded, academically selective senior schools. The education a child receives at grammar school is paid for by the state unlike at private schools which provide education for a fee. There are currently around 163 located in 36 English local authorities, with around 167,000 pupils between them. Northern Ireland has a further 67 grammar schools, but there are none in Wales or Scotland. A word of caution: there are private schools that have the word 'grammar' in their name but this is purely for historical reasons.
