The imaginative hands-on approaches fire up the children but don’t neglect the basics. Children speak with gleeful enthusiasm of their classes featuring dissection of actual eyes and hearts. Soft carpeted stairs offer a deliberately homely feel. Classrooms are packed with resources and colourful displays of work. Since 2021, Violet McConville. Joined the school in 2014 after a degree in classical studies at Edinburgh University and PGCE at London South Bank. Prior to leading the school, she was head of early years.
She grew up in Suffolk, where she was inspired to work in education early on by her own primary school teachers, then attended Haileybury in Hertfordshire. She says when she originally applied to work at Merlin she was impressed by its teacher recruitment process which is designed to test teachers’ creativity and ability to ‘think outside the box’ and inspire younger children. ‘I was hooked right from interview,’ she says.
