Art continues to year 8 with clearly inspiring teaching, new facilities and technologies. We were wowed by the boys’ 3D acrylic sculpture after Jackson Pollock, and the excitement in the room as the boys made sophisticated digital animations. Since 2009, Michael Roulston MBE MEd (50s). Married with three children, educated in Ulster, he is warm and friendly, zipping about and offering to ‘play mother’ with the Darjeeling on our visit. First impressions aside, one senses his combination of vision, drive and no nonsense was forged during his first headship in the 1980s at The Model School – an informally religiously integrated school in Northern Ireland. His contribution to conflict resolution in the field of education was recognised by the BP Gulbenkian Citizenship Award in 1994.

After a stint in Japan as headmaster of The British School in Tokyo, earning him an MBE for services to education, he returned to the UK as head of Cranleigh Prep in Surrey. This is a man who clearly thrives on challenge and change,...
