In keeping with their geographical location, what particularly distinguishes many of these schools from others in the UK is their adventurous approach to extracurricular activities, however there are also many academic superstars and those considering moving to Devon are spoilt for choice. Only two of the independent schools class themselves as ‘selective’ and, refreshingly for the UK, very few have waiting lists.

Mount Kelly Prep in Tavistock borders Dartmoor National Park is academically on the up and has an idyllic location fuelling its commitment to daily physical activities. Stover School in Newton Abbot is based in a manor house nestled between the sea and the moors and learning is based around adventure, giving a truly ‘holistic and healthy education.’ The small Trinity Preparatory School perches on a hill overlooking the sea in Teignmouth and according to our reviewer it ‘lives and breathes its ethos of being like a big family’.

Head out to the edge of Dartmoor and be seduced by the setting and sporting notoriety of Mount Kelly near Tavistock. Parents praise how the school has ‘upped the ante academically’ and this is borne out by commendable results. The setting means that outdoorsiness is in these kids’ DNA and sport, in particular swimming, is a Mount Kelly superpower. Stover School also nestles at the base of the moors and prides itself on its extended and broadened curriculum and using ‘the most appropriate environment to fuel the best learning’ so pupils are found out and about constantly across the vast rural site.

Trinity School in Teignmouth is a smaller school with a strong reputation for its pastoral care, it is a school known for ‘developing the whole child and giving them a great time along the way.’ Then there is Sands Schoolin Ashburton with its democratic approach, an alternative and unusual take on education that demands a deep questioning and honest look at the education your children would most want and benefit from. • Grammar schools best value added

We examined the value-added from KS2 to GCSE for 2022 to see which state selective grammar schools added the most value to their offspring. A note of caution - the more highly selective a grammar school, the less scope there will be to add value.

  • Grammar schools in the UK

Grammar schools are state-funded, academically selective senior schools. The education a child receives at grammar school is paid for by the state unlike at private schools which provide education for a fee. There are currently around 163 located in 36 English local authorities, with around 167,000 pupils between them. Northern Ireland has a further 67 grammar schools, but there are none in Wales or Scotland. A word of caution: there are private schools that have the word 'grammar' in their name but this is purely for historical reasons.

  • Music, drama and dance at Performing Arts schools

At specialist music, dance or performing arts schools, the arts aren't optional extras. They’re intrinsic to the school curriculum. Students are expected to fit in high level training and hours of practice alongside a full academic provision. It's a lot to ask any child to take on, but for those with exceptional performing ability this kind of education can be transformative.
